Southfield wildlife control Tip of the Month:

What should I do if I find a nest of wild animals in the attic?
It is an instinct of a mother to protect her children. The same can be observed between wild animals who are so protective and defensive when it comes to the safety of their infants. This is one of the reasons why they seek refuge in your attic. Your attic seems like a perfect spot that provides shelter and safety while at the same time a place with enough food if they know how to sneak through it. Entrance to the attic is relatively easy though it can result in an infestation if you don’t deal with it on an immediate basis. Most animals enter the attic when they are about to give birth and then build a nest for themselves and their little ones to keep them safe and sound. However, what is safe and sound for them is a dangerous and threatening situation for you. If you hear constant noises from the attic, maybe it’s time you give it a visit and see the scenario and how serious the situation is.

Confirmation
Before you take any step, you must be sure of the situation at hand. It is advised to step into your attic and confirm the presence of the nest before you take any major steps. Different animals lay eggs or give birth at different times of the year so you need to be 100% sure. The majority of wild animals are prone to breed and give birth after their hibernation period. It is highly unethical and immoral to take a dangerous step without being sure which may result in harming the baby animals. Thus, it is always necessary to confirm for yourself and then decide the appropriate actions.

Remove the nest if it is empty
Enter your attic and locate the nest. Once you have located the nest, check if there are any babies inside it. If it is empty, remove the nest. Now, there are a few pointers you should be aware of beforehand.
1. Firstly, do not remove the nest if either the mother or its babies are in it.
2. Do not remove the mother animal without its infant or vice versa.
3. Wear protective gloves while picking up the nest.   You should relocate the mother and its child together as the infants cannot survive if they are separated from their mother. Even if you relocate them to their natural habitat, they will still die unless the babies are accompanied by their mother. You need to carefully capture both the mother and her children without harming either one of them. Be gentle while you are reaching for them. Some bigger animals are difficult to get under control; then, you can use a snare pole to mobilize all its movements. Snare poles should be used with caution as it can harm the animal if you are not careful.

Eliminate all food sources
Once you have relocated the animals, you need to take preventive measures to make sure that no other wild animal finds its way back to your property. One of the ways you can do this is by eliminating all food sources which may attract animals. Animals enter a property for two main reasons: food and shelter. Removing the sources of food will make your attic or any other part of the house highly unattractive. You can do this in the following ways: 1. Cover up your pet’s food. 2. Discard the garbage as soon as possible without any delay. 3. Keep your yard clean. Close all entry points Seal all entry points that were previously used to access your house. This is bound to keep all the wild animals at bay since they won’t be able to enter your house. You can either seal these yourselves or hire a professional to do it for you. Either way, it is necessary to do this once you have removed all nests.
